Nominations for the GANG Awards 2-26-04
The nominations for the Game Audio Network Guild (GANG) Awards honoring outstanding creative and technical achievements in game audio were announced this week and Vivendi Universal's Lord of the Rings
titles made a very strong showing. A peer-based, professional association award for music and sound, the GANG Awards are analogous to the Grammy Awards put on by NARAS for the record industry.

New York Times Covers The Lord of the Rings Game Score 10-09-03
Chance Thomas, music director for Vivendi Universal Games' The Lord of the Rings games, is featured in today's New York Times article In a Nod to Lush Film Scores, Game Music Gains Texture (registration required).
The article cites Thomas' use of classical scoring techniques and the choice to record with the 50-piece Utah Film Orchestra and members of the Mormon Tabernacle choir as evidence of a craft that's quickly approaching the maturity and sophistication of film scoring.
"A great game score will play the player," according to Thomas. "It will get their adrenaline going at all the right moments, giving them a feeling of awe and wonder."

The Lord of the Rings: War of the Ring Beta Program Extended Through Exclusive Pre-Order Program 10-08-03
Thousands of additional gamers will have the opportunity to participate in the public beta test for The Lord of the Rings: War of the Ring. The beta test program, currently available only to FilePlanet subscribers, focuses on multiplayer play balancing and load testing to ensure the best possible launch for the ambitious RTS and includes five multiplayer maps.
To ensure entry into the beta program, interested testers need only pre-order War of the Ring through GameStop.com or EBGames.com starting this evening, October 8. All those who pre-order through those retail sites will be able to download the beta version of War of the Ring and begin playing immediately. As a special bonus, those enthusiastic enough to pre-order War of the Ring will be able to play the beta version until November 3rd, just a day before they are shipped the full version of the game.
All beta testers will have access to a private message board to communicate directly with the developers
